Vino: Red Wine Soap
A night of luxurious self-care can be the perfect time to enjoy a glass or two of our favorite red wine. It may come as a surprise that this delicious beverage can also be beneficial to the skin when incorporated into our routine. A base of olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, and castor oil makes a firm and cleansing bar of soap that is great for additives. Shea butter and cocoa butter work together to hydrate the skin and allow it to absorb beneficial ingredients while also soothing irritation and dryness. The naturally occurring sugars in red wine help to encourage a stable, rich, and luxurious lather in soap while its rich vitamin and antioxidant content work to nourish the skin. Dark Amber Fragrance Oil and Rose Fragrance Oil come together to form a rich and musky floral aroma that is as dark and luscious as a glass of red wine.
Ingredients
- Silicone Soap Molds
- Ice Cube Tray
- 16.99 oz of Olive Oil
- 11.28 oz of Palm Oil
- 11.28 oz of Coconut Oil
- 2.83 oz of Castor Oil
- 2.83 oz of Shea Butter
- 2.78 oz of Cocoa Butter Wafers
- 15.08 oz of Prepared Red Wine
- 6.75 oz of Sodium Hydroxide Lye
- 1 oz of Dark Amber Fragrance Oil
- ½ oz of Rose Fragrance Oil
Instructions
- The day before soap making, add around 20 oz of dry red wine to a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Simmer on low for 10 minutes and remove it from the heat. Measure 15.08 oz of the prepared wine and pour it into ice cube trays. Freeze overnight.
- Weigh and combine the fragrance oils, then set them aside.
- Weigh each base oil and butter and combine them in a large bowl. Place the bowl on top of a large pot about ⅓ full of water. Bring the water to a boil. Heat the oils until fully melted and blended, stirring occasionally.
- While the oils are melting, weigh out the lye and put it and the frozen wine in two separate bowls. Slowly add the lye to the frozen wine while gently stirring until the lye and frozen wine are both fully dissolved and the liquid is not cloudy.
- Let the oils and lye mixture both cool to 120 degrees or below, ensuring that they are within 10 degrees of each other.
- Place the immersion blender into the oils, tapping it on the bottom of the bowl to release any air bubbles.
- Slowly and gently pour the lye mixture into the oil mixture. Pouring down the side of the bowl or down the shaft of the immersion blender can reduce the chance of splashing.
- Pulse the blender a few times, watching as the oils and lye start to combine. Switch between short pulses and stirring with the blender until the mixture comes together to a light trace.
- Working quickly, stir (do not blend) in the fragrance oil blend.
- Once the soap reaches about a medium trace, pour it into the molds, scraping the bowl to ensure no soap is left behind. Tap the molds on your table or counter to release any trapped air bubbles.
- Cover the mold and allow the soap to sit in the mold for 48-72 hours at room temperature. Unmold soap, cut into bars, and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks.
