History

Our Pirates Blend is a unique combination of essential oils that is based on a formula that is hundreds of years old. The use of similar essential oil blends dates back to the fifteenth century, during the time of the Bubonic Plague or Black Death. This illness was extremely contagious and many of those who contracted it did not survive. People during this time tried countless different remedies and methods to avoid being infected with the plague and saw little success. There were however some people who found a way to help combat the Black Death.

There is a story told about a group of thieves that were captured and arrested for stealing from those who were sick and dying from the plague. Strangely enough, the thieves had not contracted the disease despite coming into close contact with many infected people. The judge that was overseeing the thieves' trial was so interested in how they seemed to be immune to the disease that he offered them a lesser punishment to share their secret. The thieves revealed that they were formerly spice and perfume merchants but had no work because of the effects of the plague on trading. They had learned about the properties of some essential oils through their work and travels and were utilizing that knowledge to help protect themselves. It is believed that they made a similar essential oil blend to Pirates Blend and applied it to their hands, feet, and masks that they wore over their faces.

As time went on, doctors began to utilize this special blend of oils to help protect themselves from the plague. It is said that they would apply the essential oils to their temples, hands, and feet before doing their rounds at the homes of the sick. They may have also applied the essential oil blend to cloth that they stuffed in their famous beak-like masks along with herbs and sometimes honey.

The Importance of EO Blends

Essential oils contain the essence of the plants from which they are extracted. This means that they are naturally complex in their composition and any given essential oil can contain a variety of beneficial properties. While many oils are beneficial on their own, those useful properties can be compounded when they interact with other essential oils. This is commonly known as synergy in the world of aromatherapy. This synergy means that oils with similar effects can be more powerful when they are blended. Some therapeutic effects may also be seen in certain blends that may be different from the individual characteristics of any one essential oil. Blending essential oils can also create unique scents with an amazing amount of depth and different aromatic notes.
